LESS OF THIS!
Dear MAME Community,
We are thrilled to bring you the latest edition of our newsletter, highlighting some exciting news and important updates from the MAME community. In this issue, we have several stories that reflect our collective efforts in making a positive impact on our surroundings and staying informed about local governance. So, let's dive right in!
Victory for MAME: Planning Application for Andy's HomeBus Turned Down We are delighted to share that MAME played a significant role in getting the planning application associated with Andy Blue’s homebus turned down at Wickham Mews. Through our collective efforts and advocacy, we successfully voiced our concerns and preserved the integrity of Wickham Mews. Well done all! This outcome showcases the power of coming together and making a difference in shaping the future of our neighbourhood.
Breakspears Gates Appeal Refused: Preserving Our Heritage We report that the appeal on erecting gates at Breakspears Mews was dismissed on appeal to the planning inspectorate. Whilst this decision reflects the recognition of the historical significance of gates across a heritage mews, and the collective determination to protect and preserve that heritage, MAME's active involvement in highlighting the importance of cultural preservation hangs on a rusty hinge: How can Lewisham Planning turn down gates in one mews and not in another? We mean of course…. ASHBY MEWS! If anything, the gates at Ashby Mews, which have been erected without planning or any enforcement, remain a bit of a steel-gated mystery. Why have these gates not been subjected to the same scrutiny as those at Breakspears Mews? Is it better for a developer to just erect gates, preventing public access, and then wait to see if the council enforces? Apparently the developer at Breakspears Mews is asking just this question about his gates too. We continue to lobby the council on your behalf for an explanation as to why an important heritage asset at Ashby Mews is lurking towards a private “no entry” gated community. It’s an outrage!
Council's Acknowledgment of Outstanding Council Tax and Business Rates The council has acknowledged the outstanding council tax and business rates from the units in Ashby Mews. Odd that… This acknowledgment sheds light on the importance of responsible financial management and accountability within local governance. It also raises questions about Lewisham council's financial stability and the steps that need to be taken to address these challenges.
Ashby Mews Units and Lewisham Council’s Dire Financial Straits Councillor Stephen Penfold opined to us that the council is close to bankruptcy. But why then does it not pursue either unpaid council tax or business rates for certain units at Ashby Mews? Ever wondered why the council is verging on bankruptcy? Perhaps looking the other way when business rates are being avoided is the “treason”. We highlight the importance of fiscal responsibility and the need for transparent and efficient financial practices within our local government. We will continue to highlight this, ad infinitum.
Councillor’s Abstention on a Recent Planning Application in the Mews Recently We were disappointed to see that Councillor Sian Eiles abstained from voting on a planning application in Wickham Mews. Why is anybody’s guess? While we respect individual choices, it is crucial to engage with our elected representatives and ensure they are actively participating in decision-making processes. This story highlights the importance of accountable and engaged representation, encouraging dialogue and transparency within our local council. However, brownie points where they are also deserved, Cllr Eiles has thrown in her support behind the campaign to have Ashby Mews opened up for established right-of-way walks. So, “Eiles” alters gated-communities is our battle cry. Finally, we hope these stories inspire you to stay engaged and informed about the developments in our community. MAME is committed to working together for positive change, preserving our heritage, and ensuring responsible governance. We encourage you to share this newsletter with your friends and neighbours, fostering a sense of community, collective action, and some despair. Thank you for being part of MAME and making a difference! Remember: It’s not what you “don’t do” that makes the difference, it's what you do do.
